Rory’s Story Cubes: A Quick Review

Any game that can help stretch your kid’s imagination is a good thing, and that is exactly what this Rory’s Story Cubes game by Gamewright does.

You don’t get much in the box apart from the 9 dice and some instructions, but those few items can give you hours of fun. The idea is to roll the dice and then choose one of the pictures as the beginning of a story, so you would start with "Once upon a time…" and then talk about the first picture, then the trick is to link all 9 pictures together into one story.

The great thing about this game is that is really gets all of you thinking and being creative to try and make the story work, and you can all have a lot of fun laughing at the sometimes crazy stories that start to emerge! It is aimed at kids but any adults playing this will have just as much fun, and while it is easier for adults to think of ways to link the pictures together then they can have fun trying to make the story as funny as possible for the kids to enjoy.

What better way is there to bond with your kids than to enjoy stories and laugh together? Rory’s Story Cubes with an average of 5 stars at the moment on Amazon, the highest you can get, there is one negative review saying they got bored with it easily, so don’t buy this if you don’t like being creative and having fun!

Here is what some of the other people who have bought this are saying:

"I got this for my six year old son as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. I’m so glad that I did!! It has been so much fun for both kids and adults to play together. We find that it is a great game to play at dinner or to bring along to restaurant to keep the kids busy while waiting for food."

"Rory’s Story Cubes are a fantastic toy/educational activity. Roll the dice, and create a story on your own, inspired by the images. Or create a cooperative story, with everyone adding to it."

"Great game! Our 4 year old loves them and has been making up stories since we received them a few days ago."

ThinkFun River Crossing Game review

This is one of the more interesting but less challenging games in the ThinkFun range. It is called the ThinkFun River Crossing Game and the idea is to get the poor little guy who is stranded on one side of the river, over to the other side using the planks which are provided.

There are 40 cards, with 4 different levels of difficulty so you 10 of each difficulty, and they get placed down as the background for the puzzle which is nice, so it looks different each time you play it. Then you put the tree stumps in the right places along with the appropriate planks and away you go. As you move the man around then you need to adjust the planks between the tree stumps to make sure he can get across without getting wet!

The pieces are well made, like all the puzzles in this range, and the planks have magnets in them to help them stay in place. Although the pieces are smaller with this than most of the other puzzles they make, so they could get lost which would ruin your fun. They do give you a bag to keep everything in though, but you still need to be careful.

The reviews for this ThinkFun River Crossing Game are good, although adults seem to find it a lot easier than others in the ThinkFun range, which means it can’t be as taxing as the others. All in all it is a good buy if you have most of the other puzzles from this company already, otherwise I’d start with some of the other ones we have reviewed first.

Here is what some of the other people who have bought this are saying:

"We really enjoyed this game. My dad, me and my 4-year-old played together, figuring out solutions. I admit it’s a bit hard for my 4-year-old but she will be ready for this eventually ( and in the meantime we can play together). I would buy another one for my 6-year-old niece."

"Given to me as a ‘joke’, but became a hit with all ages during a recent visit to friends in Brazil. In fact, our friend is a child psychologist in Sao Paulo and she indicated that it would be a great tool with her clients. She later reports that it is a big hit in the clinic."

"The game pieces are very good quality. I found the cards to be challenging. The game was well worth the money."

ThinkFun Block By Block Puzzle Game Review

This is the ThinkFun Block By Block Puzzle Game and I have to admit I love and hate this kind of puzzle! Have you ever played with those puzzles that come as a cube, then you separate them into different shaped blocks and have to try and put the cube back together?

This is like that but instead of putting the cube back together then instead you have a pack of 60 cards with different shapes on them like you can see in the picture to the right, and then you need to use the blocks to make that shape. The cards increase in difficulty as you go and they do have hints on the back to help you out, but that always feels like giving up when you use them!

The frustrating thing about this kind of puzzle is that there are so few pieces, only 7 in total, yet you can spend hours trying all sorts of different combinations until you get the right one! Plus you notice after awhile that you are repeating combinations you’ve already tried! I guess you need to think it through more than I do, I just tend to try things until I find one that works, but it is a great way to get your children thinking, it has great reviews and is just over 10 bucks at the time of writing, so it is great value for money.

One quick thing to mention though, it is really for older kids, around 12+, younger kids might get frustrated with it and give up too quickly.

Here is what some of the other people who have purchased this are saying:

"At first my 7 year old had a bit of difficulty with the concept, but once she figured it out, she loves it!"

"We got this for my husband for Christmas, last year. He is an engineer and loves this puzzle. It is a challenge and some puzzles are easier than others. Younger children may become frustrated, but there are various levels."

"I am a guidance counselor in a middle school and have a number of “toys” to distract the children when they come to my office and help them unwind a bit. Some enjoy this puzzle by just building their own creations and others enjoy the challenge of completing one of the puzzles on the cards."

ThinkFun Hoppers Game Review

This is another great little game from ThinkFun, called the Hoppers game. It doesn’t have the distinctive bag that the others we have discussed do, but fortunately the playing board opens up and the cards and playing pieces get stored in that instead. The fact it can all be stored in the base of the playing area, along with the fact that the frogs sit on pegs so they don’t slide around, makes this a fantastic toy for children to take when travelling around.

The concept behind the game is simple (as with all ThinkFun products), you ‘leap frog’ one frog over another, then remove the frog that was jumped over, the idea is to leave only the red frog on the board at the end. You get 40 different scenarios to play out, ranging in difficulty from starter puzzles to fiendishly difficult expert puzzles that will frustrate you for days (although there is the solution on the back if you get hopping mad and give up!).

It is well made, durable and looks fantastic, the reviews for it online are all positive and at the time of writing it costs less than 10 dollars, so this is a fantastic toy for any young child to enjoy that they will get years of enjoyment out of.

Here is what some of the other people who have bought this are saying:

"It is the greatest travel game. My son got this when he was 3 years old, and 4 years later it is still his first choice when we ask him to pick some toys for a trip……..and he has a GameBoy!! It is very durable, constructed very well and has seen no wear in 4 years of regular use. This is one of the toys that’ll, literally, last you a life-time."

"At first Hoppers appears to be a very easy game but that is its charm. The game gets progressively more difficult and very challenging. Most of all this game is out right FUN! I simply couldn’t put it down."

"My friend got Hoppers as a birthday present and we all played it. It was really fun and it got more challenging as we went on."
